GEN 3.6   SEARCH AND RESCUE

1.RESPONSIBLE AUTHORITY
Gambia National Search and Rescue Commis-sion is charged with the responsibility to ensure a coordinated and effective Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Operations within the Gambia.

ICAO SARPS in Annex 12 to the Chicago con-vention and the provision of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) convention relating to Search and Rescue as prescribed by International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue (IAMSAR) are applied.
2.AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY
This shall be within the territorial boundary of The Gambia and cover the area of responsibility of the Gambia as laid down by the International Civil Aviation Organizations and the United Nations convention on the laws of the sea.
3.TYPES OF SERVICE
Provide for a public switched telecommunication service to make available telecommunication facilities for the purposes of Search and Rescue Operation.
Coordination between the relevant Aeronautical and Maritime authorities to provide for the most effective and efficient Search and Rescue Operations within the Gambia to ensure that assistance is rendered to person in distress, on a 24 hours basis
Provision of assistance to aircraft and vessels on distress and survivors of aircraft and vessels accidents regardless of nationality or status of the persons of the circumstance in which the persons are round.
Rescue equipment in the form of inflatable rubber dinghes, medical supplies emergency rations and droppable survival equipment and 406 MHz communications systems are available.
4.SAR AGREEMENTS
Agreement with neighboring states to strengthen Search and Rescue cooperation and coordination, setting out the conditions for entry of each other Search and Rescue units in their respective territories providing for expedit-ing entry of those units with the least possible formalities.
Agreements with all aircraft, vessels and local services and facilities which do not form part of government; to cooperate fully in SAR Opera-tions and render assistance to the survivor of aircraft of vessel’s accidents.
5.GENERAL CONDITIONS OF AVAILABILITY
The SAR service and facilities in The Gambia are available to neighbouring states upon request to the Civil Aviation Authority when they are not engaged in SAR operations in their home territory.
6.PROCEDURES AND SIGNALS USED
Procedures and Signals used by Aircraft
The Search and Rescue signals to be used or procedures for pilots observing an accident or intercepting a distress call are those prescribed in ICAO Annex 12, Chapter 5 as shown in the table 6.3 below

The frequency 121.500 MHz is guarded one nuously (H 24) by ATC at the Banjul International Airport.
