1. | CUSTOMS REQUIREMENTS CONCERNING CARGO AND OTHER ARTICLES | |||||
Importation of Cargo | ||||||
All cargo imports are subject to customs formalties. Goods may not be unloaded or trans-shipped from an aircraft without the authority of the Customs Offices. | ||||||
In case of scheduled aircraft cargo it may be off-loaded immediately after a customs officer has boarded the aircraft. | ||||||
Exportation of Cargo | ||||||
The exporter is responsible for the appropriate and timely customs declaration prior loading the cargo. The cargo has to be precisely manifested in an entry form and submitted to the customs for clearance | ||||||

Permission must be obtained before shipment either from the country of origin or The Gambia. Sanitary certificates or adequate documents are required for food and related shipments | ||||||
Customs Formalities on Departing Passenger The Control of Restricted Export | ||||||

Travellers/Exporter must obtain the following: | ||||||
Clearance certificate from the office of the President. | ||||||
Travellers or exporters to prepare and submit accustom S.A.D. form obtain-able from the custom office at the Banjul International Airport. (BIA) | ||||||
Currencies: Any type of legal currency both (foreign and local). Traveler/Exporter travelling with more than (10) thousand US Dollar or its equivalent in any type of legal currency must obtain a currency declaration form being issued by customs on behalf of the central bank of The Gambia | ||||||
Fish Products: Must have a clearance certificate from the Fisheries Department. If in large quantities, it will require the completion of a custom (S.A.D.) form. | ||||||
Agricultural Products: Must have clearance certificate from the Agricultural Department. If in large quantities must complete a customs (S.A.D.) form. | ||||||
These last two items mainly applicable when it comes to exports by freighters (cargo). There are costs involved in all customs documentations. | ||||||
2. | AGRICULTURAL QUARANTINE REQUIREMENTS | |||||
Livestock Act 2023 | ||||||
Import of live Animal Requirement in The Gambia. | ||||||
A. All animals required to be accompanied with a health/veterinary inspection certificate issued by an official Veterinarian appointed/authorized by the competent authority of the exporting country not more than 72 hours before the departure of the animal. | ||||||
B. The exporting animal/consignor of live animals should obtain an import
permit from the Department of Livestock Services (Veterinary Services and The Competent
Authority of The Gambia).
Part-iii: Standard operating procedures for seaports and airports. The veterinary services shall issue standard operating procedures on quarantine at each seaport, airport and official border post in the Gambia. | ||||||
Part-vi: Import Controls and Ancillary Matters
Border Post Requirements. 1) A person shall not import animals, animal by-products, meat and meat products, feeds and feed ingredients, veterinary drugs and biological products or such other items unless he or she; a) Present them for such close inspection, examination procedures and quarantine measure as the veterinary services may deem necessary and b) Complies with the import requirements as provided for in the laws of the Gambia. 2) The import requirements include; a) A certificate clearance issued by the veterinary services obtained prior to importation, and; b) A veterinary health certificate or its equivalent from the country of origin. | ||||||
Quarantine Stations For Imported Animals
1) A person shall not remove or unload an imported animal without the consent of the veterinary services. 2) The veterinary services, in consultation with the ministry may establish quarantine stations to accommodate and contain imported animals of suspected outbreak of the listed and non listed diseases from the origin of imported animals. 3) The veterinary services shall collect fees that is commensurate to the services that they are rendering at the quarantine station for imported animals. | ||||||
Restriction On
Imports:
1) The Minister may, in consultation with the veterinary services request the Government to place a temporary ban on imports of animals and products of animals origin following a risk assessment or risk analysis. 2) Where a shipment of animals in transit in the Gambia from a country that has an outbreak of a notifiable or listed disease, the veterinary services shall apply a strict bio-security plan with its inherent measures to that shipment. | ||||||
Part-vii: International Trade. | ||||||
International Certification | ||||||
1) The veterinary services shall, in compliance with
international standards, issue international veterinary certificates, including
international health certificates and permits.
2) A veterinarian who is not an officer of the veterinary services may apply in writing to the Head of the veterinary services for authorisation to issue international health certificates. 3) The veterinary services may authorise in writing a veterinarian who is not an officer of the veterinary services to issue an international health certificate after conducting a clinical examination of an animal. | ||||||
Part-viii: Reagents, Feeds, Genetic Materials, Veterinary Drugs and Biological Products: | ||||||
Importation of Reagents, Feeds, Genetic Materials, Veterinary Drugs and Biological Products: | ||||||
1) A person shall not import any reagent, feed,
genetic material, veterinary drug or biological product unless he or she possesses an
import permit issued by the veterinary services for that feed, veterinary drug or
biological product.
2) Where a disease occurs in a foreign country while feeds, veterinary drug or biological products being shipped are in transit in that country, the veterinary services shall apply a strict biosecurity plan with its inherent measures to that shipment when it arrives in the Gambia. | ||||||
Prohibition on the use of reagents, vaccines, genetic materials, veterinary drugs and biological products. | ||||||
Where the veterinary services considers that any reagent, vaccine, genetic material, veterinary drug or biological product is a risk to the health and welfare of humans and animals, it may prohibit its use by order published in the Gazette. | ||||||
Additional Information | ||||||
1- The health/veterinary inspection certificate is the
one available in the exporting country for official use in the animal species in
particular by the competent authority of the Country.
2- The IMPORT PERMIT requires for the exporter/consignor of the live animals to provide the following information to the official veterinarian of The Gambia: Name & Address of exporter/consignor, Animal Name or ID, species Name, Sex, Breed, Colour, Age, Port of Embarkment and Arrival Date. 3- For the species where proof of vaccination is required, the official veterinarian & issuant of the IMPORT PERMIT will require scanned/photo copies of vaccination records of the live animal to be imported into the Gambia. 4- Details of The contact person for IMPORTS/EXPORTS are as follows: THE DIRECTOR, DEPARTMENT OF LIVESTOCK SERVICES, MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE, ABUKO VET. 3. | WILDLIFE CONSERVATION AND QUARANTINE REQUIREMENTS | |||||
The importation and exportation of wildlife, meat or Trophy is not prohibited. Permission is required from the Department of Parks and Wildlife Management and a valid import or export permit issued or a Convention on Inter-national Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) permit issued. The Wildlife is governed and protected by "The Biodiversity and Wildlife Act of 2003". The general public, private sector, cooperate bodies and visitors are earnestly advised to take full cognizance of this law in their own interest. Any contravention will lead to a fine of up to Dalasi 50,000 (Fifty Thousand Dalasi), or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or both. | ||||||
Quarantine Requirements | ||||||
All wildlife imported into the Gambia should be taken to DPWM H/Q, Abuko Nature Reserve for the required inspection and observations before being released or exported. | ||||||
